Would a "surfing locations" type be of interest here?  I'm thinking of things like Bells Beach.

Yeah, I would think so.  Quite a big category, but definitely a good one.

Any thoughts on what properties it should have?

I have no idea from a surf perspective, but we could easily delegate in some of the properties from /location/location to encourage surfing base members to contribute data.

              Absolutely!

I've started a Surf Break type in my default domain, but haven't gotten much momentum there yet. Maybe we should go ahead and just add the type here so we can start tagging locations as surf breaks. Some properties I'd like to capture eventually:

              • Which direction it breaks (left, right, both)
              • Bottom composition (rock, coral, sand, etc.)
              • Average wave length (most likely an integer range)
              • Average water temp (want this for Scuba diving as well)

Some sort of average (or maximum) wave height would be cool as well. However, talking wave height with surfers can be problematic do to ego and subjective scales (Florida vs. Hawaii vs California, etc.).

We may be able to use a site like WannaSurf as a reference, but again, a lot of their properties are subjective. Here is Bells Beach as an example

I'd love to see some more properties added to the surfer type. Stance would be a good start (goofy and regular). Sponsors would be another.  Might be interesting to create a Surf Competition type and link that in as well. What do you think?

Great, I'll add them.  I was debating whether or not to create a more generic boardsports type and delegate the property, but I can always migrate it later.  I have a generic sponsored recipient model that I've been using - check it out here...

Awesome! The types within Sponsorship should provide really useful.

I could see abstracting something like stance (snowboarding, skateboarding, etc.) but, as you mentioned, it's easy to move later.

I've created a Surf Film type in my default domain. It has some basic properties now, including Directed by, Surfers (with expected type of Surfer), Notable Filming Location, etc. Would you be interested in adding this to the Surfing domain?
